I have been collecting Souvenirs for ten years now. They are my most popular photos on Flickr and have drawn international attention. In summer 1989 I was invited to dinner by friends in Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany. A guest was also present who had been a development worker in a rural community on the Ivory Coast years earlier. He wanted to visit them with an amateur football team and play a tournament. I decided to go along. Although not one of my photos was sold (Kodachrome on an F3 for the nerds), I never experienced, before or since, so much in such a short space of time.
The decade leading up to reunification in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Women badly influenced my life in 1981. My first wife left me for my (until that point) best friend and Margaret Thatcher came to power. So I sold our flat, split the proceeds and squatted a house in Islington, London. Feeling wounded and isolated, I lay in bed under the rotting plaster of my ceiling and terrified of the unknown in front of me decided to make my passion of up till then, photography, my profession.
